BOTOX® and other neuromodulators, such as Dysport, work by temporarily paralyzing the muscles that cause wrinkles and other conditions such as excessive sweating and muscle spasms. When injected into the muscles, these neurotoxins block the nerve signals that cause the muscles to contract, which in turn, relaxes the overlying skin and reduces the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines.
BOTOX® is an injectable treatment commonly used to treat wrinkles and lines in areas such as the forehead, between the eyebrows (glabellar lines or “frown lines”), and around the eyes (crow’s feet). When you come in for your consultation with Dr. Keyes or one of our advanced practice practitioners. You will discuss your aesthetic goals and your health will be evaluated. After discussing which neuromodulator is best for you, your treatment plan will be created and you can receive your treatment that same day.
Some redness and swelling may occur at the injection site, but this typically subsides within a few hours. Most people can resume their normal activities immediately after treatment.
The effects of BOTOX® begin to take effect, but it may take up to two weeks to see the full results. The muscles that were injected begin to relax, and the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines in the treated area starts to fade. If you notice any muscle movement after the first two weeks, a touch-up appointment may be necessary.
The effects of BOTOX® typically last for two to three months. During this time, the muscles gradually regain their function, and the wrinkles and fine lines will begin to reappear. If you would like to maintain your appearance, we recommend scheduling touch-up appointments once movement returns so the neuromodulator doesn’t wear off completely.
We highly suggest waiting at least 24 hours before you exercise to avoid a faster breakdown of the toxin. Not only could it reduce the effectiveness of the neurotoxin, but it could also increase the likelihood of bruising.
If you do feel any pain or discomfort, you can lightly use an ice pack for 10 – 15 minutes at a time. Finally, try to avoid any sun or heat exposure such as hot tubs, saunas, hot showers/baths, or tanning beds for the first 24 hours.
