What is a Brow Lift?

A Brow Lift, also referred to as an eyebrow lift or forehead lift, is a cosmetic surgical procedure that raises your eyebrows to reduce wrinkles and frown lines while lifting sagging skin.

The main target of this procedure is to correct certain cumulative effects on the facial anatomy that are associated with aging. This is achieved by either removing or changing the muscles and skin that create drooping eyebrows, forehead furrows, and frown lines in the upper facial area.

Types of Brow Lifts

Classic Lift

Also called a Pretrichial (hairline) incision, this classic lift makes an aesthetically “friendly” incision along the hairline to create a powerful and long-lasting look. This procedure is ideal for patients who want to lift their eyebrows while shortening the forehead by removing a strip of skin and underlying tissue along the incision.

By shortening the forehead, your hairline will be lowered – which is ideal for those with a high forehead. This procedure lifts everything upwards from your eyebrows, even addressing the shape and symmetry of your brow shape and symmetry.

Direct Brow Lift

Sometimes called a mid-forehead Lift or a “Gull Wing” Lift, a direct Brow Lift removes a section of skin and underlying tissue above the eyebrows or in the forehead. This procedure is best for a patient with a severely drooping brow droop and significant forehead wrinkles where Dr. Keyes can naturally hide the incision. It is preferred for patients with an extremely thin or balding hairline.

This technique eloquently lifts a sagging brow through tightening and smoothing by pulling the skin and tissue of the forehead down rather than up – making this an ideal method of lowering a receding hairline and/ or high forehead. This procedure can also address eyebrow shape and asymmetry. Dr. Keyes will take great care when positioning the scar and fully camouflaging it along your eyebrows.

Coronal Lift

A Coronal brow lift is similar to the classic lift, except the incision is made on the crown of your head, further back in the hairline. While this method will hide the incision well, it will increase the height of the forehead which may not be best for some patients.

Endoscopic Lift

The Endoscopic Lift is a very popular technique that only requires five small incisions that are hidden in the hairline, leaving no visible scar.

This procedure can lift everything from the hairline to the eyebrows. It tightens and smoothes the entire forehead while lifting the eyebrow area to “open up” your upper face. Eyebrow shape and asymmetry can also be addressed with this type of lift.

During the procedure, Dr. Keyes will make three to five short (<1 inch) scalp incisions behind the hairline. He will then take an endoscope, which is a pencil-like camera connected to a monitor, and insert it through one of the incisions, providing him with a clear view of the muscles and tissues beneath the skin. Through a different incision, Dr. Keyes lifts the forehead skin and alters the muscles and underlying tissues to produce a smooth appearance.

In some cases, patients may also have their eyebrows lifted and secured into a higher position with sutures that are either beneath the skin’s surface or temporarily fixated behind the hairline. This is an outpatient procedure with a short recovery period.

This type of lift may not be ideal for someone with severe brow descent or heavy skin, and may not be as long-lasting a lift as the Classic Lift.

What’s the first step?

If you are looking into a Brow Lift in Miami, FL, your first step is to speak with our Patient Care Coordinator to discuss your goals and an initial screening. Once this is complete, you will be able to have a consultation with Dr. Keyes.

During the appointment, you can ask questions about the procedure, discuss your aesthetic goals, and have Dr. Keyes examine your face and forehead. He will also ask you some questions about your medical history to create a personalized treatment plan that integrates your aesthetic preferences, individual needs, and desired results.

Using the information he collects, Dr. Keyes will then create your surgical plan, which will include the techniques he plans on using, the anesthesia, and every other aspect of the procedure. If you are satisfied with the plan, you will meet with our Patient Coordinator to schedule your surgery. You will also be provided with some instructions to promote a higher potential of having a smooth surgery and recovery.

What to expect on the day of Brow Lift surgery

On the day of your surgery at Celebrity Plastics in Miami, FL, after meeting with Dr. Michael Keyes and going over your procedure one more time, he will make marks on your brow in front of a mirror so that you can see the anticipated final brow position. You will also meet with our Anesthesiologist who will administer your general anesthesia so your brow lift procedure is more tolerable.

Once you are sedated, Dr. Keyes will begin your surgery using the techniques that were discussed during the consultation. Please refer to the variety of techniques listed above for a better understanding of what will happen during each type of lift.

A Brow Lift will typically take a few hours to perform the procedure, depending on the techniques Dr. Keyes uses and the extent of the outcome you are looking to achieve.

Consultation

During your consultation, you can ask questions about the procedure, discuss your aesthetic goals, and have Dr. Keyes examine your face and forehead. He will also ask you some questions about your medical history to create a personalized treatment plan that integrates your aesthetic preferences, individual needs, and desired results.

Pre-operative preparation

Before your Brow Lift, you will need to get some tests performed, such as lab work and an EKG, so Dr. Keyes can ensure you the safest outcome. We do offer these tests at our facility for a small fee. You will need to get plenty of rest, consume high-protein shakes, and maintain a healthy lifestyle. You will need to pick up your prescriptions before your surgery. On the day of the procedure, we would recommend you do not apply any lotions on your face after you shower, and bring your prescriptions with you.

Surgery

When you arrive, Dr. Keyes and our Anesthesiologist will speak with you to go over the details with you and answer any lingering questions you may have. Dr. Keyes will also take this time to make any markings he will use as a guide for your procedure before sending you to the Operating Room. A Brow Lift will typically take a few hours to perform the procedure, depending on the techniques Dr. Keyes uses and the extent of the outcome you are looking to achieve.

Recovery

You are encouraged to have minimal activity, routinely apply ice to your forehead, and keep your head elevated to reduce the amount of swelling. Patients will experience some bruising and swelling following the procedure. They are usually comfortable returning to their normal routine activities in about two weeks. You should be able to return to full activity starting at three weeks postoperatively.

Post-operative appointments

You will need to return a day after surgery so one of our nurses can monitor your recovery and change out bandages if needed. A week after this check-up, you will meet with Dr. Keyes so he can assess your recovery. You can expect a few more appointments over the next six months that are appropriately spaced apart. Pictures may be taken during one of these follow-ups.

Who are the best candidates for the Brow Lift procedure?

A Brow Lift is a great way to address a drooping brow giving a patient’s eyes a heavy and tired appearance. Many patients can also have excess skin on their upper eyelids, creating an upset, angry, or tired look, and some patients just have a subconscious inclination to frown. In addition to possessing these features, the best candidates for a Miami Brow Lift should have the following characteristics:

  • Aged 40 or above. This is when most people begin seeing more wrinkles, fine lines, and brow drooping.
  • Saggy eyebrows and wrinkled forehead.
  • Maintaining realistic expectations of procedure outcome

Brow Lift Recovery

Your Brow Lift will be an outpatient procedure, which means most patients will be able to return home with the help of a family member or friend; if need be, we can help arrange for recovery at an aftercare facility. There will be some expected mild swelling and bruising, which should subside over the coming days. You will be provided post-operative instructions that will help make your recovery as easy and successful as possible.

Patients may shower and wash their hair on the first postoperative day. During the first five days after your procedure, you are encouraged to have minimal activity, routinely apply ice to your forehead, and keep your head elevated to reduce the amount of swelling.

You may go on some light walks, as well as up and down stairs, on the first day post-surgery. If you are feeling well enough, you could potentially return to work in about 10 days, but you should plan on taking a few weeks off and expect to return to full activity only starting three weeks from the procedure.

As with all surgical procedures, there is some scarring from a brow lift procedure. However, the area of the incisions is all designed such that the scars will be hidden within or at the hairline. Dr. Keyes can also recommend some products that will help reduce the appearance of any scarring.
