What is a Breast Reduction?

Breast Reduction involves the removal of skin and tissue from the breast, followed by reshaping and elevating to create a smaller, more proportionate bust size. Breast reduction surgery is a personal decision often undertaken for both health and aesthetic reasons, including helping improve self-image, and the ability to take part in physical activities. You can have breast reduction surgery at any age – sometimes even as a teenager – but breasts that aren’t yet fully grown might need a second surgery later in life.

What are the benefits of Breast Reduction?

The benefits of a Miami Breast Reduction include the following:

  • Improved confidence and self-esteem: Clinical studies have revealed that many women feel better about themselves, their body image, and overall health after their reduction.
  • Your back feels better: This is widely cited as the greatest benefit for women choosing this surgery. Breast reduction can relieve pain in the neck, shoulders, upper back, and breasts, as well as headaches and nerve problems.
  • Exercise becomes easier and more enjoyable: Weight in any area of your body can make physical activities more uncomfortable or even unbearable. Reducing the size of your breasts can have you feeling more comfortable when active.
  • Less skin irritation: Larger breasts can create more persistent skin-on-skin contact, which can become very uncomfortable over time. By lessening the skin-on-skin contact, you should experience less irritation.
  • Easier to breathe: Some women find it easier to breathe with smaller, more proportionate breasts as they don’t experience the heft or weight on their chest.

Whatever your reason for needing a breast reduction may be, when you come to see Dr. Keyes, he will talk through your options and help you make the right decision.

Who are the best candidates for the Breast Reduction procedure?

Breast Reduction in Miami, FL is ideal for people who have large breasts that cause the following issues:

  • Chronic back, neck, and shoulder pain
  • Shoulder grooves from bra straps
  • Chronic rash or skin irritation under the breasts
  • Nerve pain
  • Not being able to take part in some activities
  • Poor self-image due to large breasts
  • Trouble fitting into bras and clothing

People of any age can be a good candidate for breast reduction surgery, sometimes even as early as a teenager (with parental consent), however, breasts that aren’t yet fully grown might need a second surgery later in life.

You generally aren’t considered the right candidate for a breast reduction if you are pregnant or planning on having children, obese, or planning to lose weight. Dr. Keyes assesses each patient individually to determine whether they are the right candidate for a breast reduction.

What’s the first step?

The first step to getting a Breast Reduction in Miami is to schedule a consultation. During this session, Dr. Keyes will explain what breast reduction involves. He will assess your desired outcomes and determine whether you are the right candidate for this procedure. Your consultation session is also your opportunity to discuss any concerns or questions you have.

Upon completion of the assessment, Dr. Keyes will create your surgical plan and our Patient Coordinator will be able to confirm the price for your surgery, schedule your procedure date, and provide you with directions to follow to ensure the most optimal results.

What to expect on the day of Breast Reduction surgery

On the day of your breast reduction surgery in Miami, you can expect to arrive at our practice and fill out paperwork. After being taken to the procedure room and prepped for surgery, Dr. Keyes will walk you through the process so you know what to expect.

First, we will administer general anesthesia that will minimize pain and discomfort throughout the procedure. Next, Dr. Keyes will make the incision on the breasts. Depending on what was discussed during your consultation, and the plan marked out by Dr. Keyes from your assessment, he will choose either an incision around the areola (often referred to as a lollipop incision) or a keyhole incision.

He will then remove the excess tissue and reposition the nipple and areola, which remains tethered to its original blood and nerve supply. If necessary the areola diameter is reduced by removing skin around the perimeter. Underlying breast tissue is reduced and the remaining breast tissue is lifted and shaped.

With extremely large breasts, the nipple and areola may need to be removed completely and then repositioned to a higher position on the breast. In this case, the nipple and areola will not have any sensation after the operation and it will take longer to heal. The final step in the breast reduction surgery is to close the incision. The incisions are brought together to reshape the now smaller breast. Sutures are layered deep within the breast tissue to create and support the newly shaped breasts. Sutures, skin adhesives, or surgical tape close the skin. Incision lines are permanent, but in most cases, they will fade over time.

Contact

The first step to getting your breast reduction surgery is to contact Celebrity Plastics and schedule a consultation through our patient coordinator.

Consultation

The consultation is where you will discuss your problems and intended goals with Dr. Keyes. During the session, Dr. Keyes will explain the process, assess whether you are a good candidate, and give you information about risks, recovery, and what to expect regarding results. The consultation will also be able to determine your price for the surgery.

Pre-operative preparation

Before your surgery, Dr. Keyes and his team will give you a set of instructions to prepare you for your surgery. This may involve fasting for a certain amount of time. If you are taking any medications, it is important to disclose this to Dr. Keyes. You may be required to have a physical exam before surgery or obtain breast imaging depending on your personal or family history or age. Dr. Keyes asks his patients to avoid taking aspirin and certain anti-inflammatory drugs, as they can increase bleeding.

Surgery

On the day of your surgery, Dr. Keyes will first administer a type of anesthesia. Next, he will make the incision on the breast, which he discussed during your consultation. The third step is to remove the excess tissue and reposition the breasts. Once that is complete, he will close the incision. The procedure itself tends to last between 3 to 4.5 hours.

Recovery

Once the surgery is complete, Dr. Keyes and his team will apply bandages or give you a special bra to wear during your recovery. You will also be given a set of post-operative instructions to follow during the healing process. It is advisable to arrange transportation to and from the clinic, as you will need to avoid strenuous and physical activities for a few weeks following surgery. A small, thin tube may be temporarily placed under the skin to drain any excess blood or fluid. You will be advised on the type of pain medication you can take to minimize discomfort.

Post-operative appointments

Within a few weeks, you will be required to visit Dr. Keyes for a follow-up appointment. This is where he will monitor your healing progress, take a look at the incision, and ensure your breasts are sitting where they should be. Dr. Keyes will assess how long you need to continue wearing the medical support bra for and what kind of activities you are safe to engage in depending on your recovery process.

Breast Reduction recovery

Following your surgery, you will be taken into a recovery room to allow time for the anesthesia to wear off and prepare for your journey home. Gauze or bandages will be applied to your incisions, and an elastic bandage or support bra will minimize swelling and support the reconstructed breast. A small, thin tube may be temporarily placed under the skin to drain any excess blood or fluid. A pain pump may also be used to reduce the need for narcotics.

It is recommended that you arrange transportation to and from the clinic so that you can avoid all strenuous activity during your recovery.

Dr. Keyes will also advise you on the types of pain medication you will need throughout the recovery process. He will also give you detailed information on what to check on your bandages each day to ensure healing is on track.

The first week, you will experience some swelling, bruising, and some minor pain that can be treated with prescription pain medications. You will need to limit any physical activity to a minimum to help expedite your recovery.

Over the next few weeks, you should begin to feel well enough to return to work; however, you should still limit any exercise or physical activity. You will need to continue wearing the support bra provided until Dr. Keyes tells you it’s OK to not wear it anymore.

After about a month and a half, you should be able to return to your normal exercise routine. You will be encouraged to schedule routine mammograms to ensure that you remain healthy. At this point, Dr. Keyes will also be able to discuss your scar minimalization options.
