What is Liposuction?

Liposuction, also known as lipoplasty or liposculpture, is a minimally invasive procedure. Often referred to as ‘Body Contouring’, this cosmetic procedure involves removing excess fat deposits in target body areas via a few tiny incisions. At Celebrity Plastics in Miami, FL, some common areas treated with our procedure are:

  • Abdomen
  • Arms
  • Buttocks
  • Cheeks
  • Chin
  • Hips/Love handles
  • Back and upper back rolls
  • Inner and Outer Thighs
  • Neck
  • Knees
  • Neck
  • Thighs
  • Upper arms
  • Waist

While Liposuction is not a substitute for weight loss, it can permanently remove stubborn fat that does not respond to diet and exercise.

What’s the First Step?

The first step to getting your Liposuction surgery in Miami, FL, is to book a consultation at Celebrity Plastics. During your initial consultation, you will meet with Dr. Keyes and discuss your challenges and body goals.

Dr. Keyes will then evaluate your health, determine where your fat deposits lie, and assess the condition of your skin. He will also explain the body-contouring methods that may be most appropriate for you. Once you’ve had a chance to share your questions and concerns and collaboratively arrive at the best direction for your body contouring journey, Dr. Keyes will create your customized procedure plan, and our Patient Coordinator will be able to help you schedule your appointment.

You will be provided with pre-surgery instructions which you are encouraged to follow. These include directions on eating, drinking, medications, and use of cigarettes and alcohol amongst other specifics.

What to Expect on the Day of Liposuction Surgery

On the day of your procedure, the type of anesthesia will vary depending on the area of concern. For smaller areas, we will use a local anesthetic, with larger areas and extensive procedures requiring general anesthesia to be administered.

Dr. Keyes will begin by making strategically placed, tiny incisions, usually only a few millimeters in length. Through these small openings, a cannula (a very thin tube with a blunt tip) is inserted to remove and suck out the stubborn fat cells. This is possible as the cannula is connected to a rubber tubing that is attached to a high vacuum pressure machine. The procedure length varies from as short as 30 minutes to as long as several hours depending upon the area of the body being targeted.

If you decide to go through with liposuction, it is important to follow our pre-operative preparation instructions. This may include obtaining medical clearance from your primary care physician, avoiding certain medications, following a particular diet and exercise plan, and getting some lab work done to ensure you are in good health for the procedure.

The procedure length varies from as short as 30 minutes to as long as several hours depending upon the area of the body being targeted.

Recovery

Usually, patients resume work and their everyday activities about one week after the procedure. Patients should avoid vigorous activities such as exercise for several more weeks as directed.

The full results of liposuction vary depending on the individual, but you should start to see visible changes in your body shape and contours within a few weeks after the procedure, once the swelling diminishes. The final results won’t be visible until after a few months post-procedure.

Liposuction Recovery

After surgery, you will be monitored in our recovery room until Dr. Keyes decides that you are safe to be discharged. You will need a family member or friend available to drive you home in case you are still feeling some of the effects of sedation.

You will likely experience some fluid drainage from the incisions so Dr. Keyes may leave a small drainage tube inserted beneath your skin for a couple of days to control this. You may also be fitted with a snug elastic compression garment to wear over the treated area for a few weeks to manage swelling and help your skin form to its new contours.

During your initial recovery period, you might experience some pain, burning, swelling, bleeding, and temporary numbness. Dr. Keyes will prescribe you some temporary medications to prevent infection, reduce swelling, and alleviate any pain.

Usually, patients resume work and their everyday activities about one week after the procedure. Patients should avoid vigorous activities such as exercise for several more weeks as directed.

You will also be sent home with post-surgical care instructions. Please follow them with care and precision. Some of the more important instructions include wearing your compression garments 24/7 during your initial recovery to help reduce any swelling. You may take them off while you shower, but we encourage you to keep wearing them continuously until Dr. Keyes says it’s OK to stop wearing them. You should make sure that your garments are restrictive, but not so tight that they cause blisters or make it difficult to breathe.

Another post-op instruction we encourage you to consider is a lymphatic drainage massage. Sometimes after surgery, your lymphatic system tends to decrease the efficiency of lymph production, which can result in inflammation and other health issues. Your lymphatic system is part of your body’s defense mechanism that consists of an internal network that works to maintain your body’s health; lymph is fluid that carries immune cells, proteins, hormones, toxins, and fatty acids throughout your body. Massaging the areas of surgery will stimulate the flow of lymph and remove the toxins from your body at a faster rate.
