What is a Labiaplasty?

Labiaplasty is performed in the inner vaginal lips, called the labia minora, to reduce their size and improve their appearance. At the same time, the outer vaginal lips, called the labia majora may be resculpted with fat injections or trimmed.

The procedure can either be performed by trimming excess tissue and using dissolving sutures to close the edges or a wedge-shaped area can be trimmed on each side of the labia minora and joined to reduce the area within the outer labia. The result is smaller, significantly less pronounced inner labia and a more “tucked in” appearance.

What to expect on the day of Labiaplasty surgery

Labiaplasty is usually performed on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia or general anesthesia, depending on the extent of the procedure. Once you’ve been made comfortable and are properly sedated, Dr. Keyes will be ready to begin the procedure.

This procedure is often performed via two different surgical techniques. The first requires Edge Trimming, which is the process of removing the free edge of each labia to reduce the portion present outside of the Labia Majora.

The second surgical technique is Wedge Resection, which involves the removal of a triangular wedge of tissue with the remaining portions sutured back together. Dr. Keyes will discuss with you which technique would be best, as technique selection is dependent on a multitude of the patient’s anatomic and lifestyle factors.

Clitoral Hood Reduction is then performed, if necessary. While this is widely considered to be a technically difficult procedure that can have consequences if not done correctly, Dr. Keyes utilizes his experience and knowledge to use this technique to decrease the chance of scarring around the clitoris by placing the incision at a safe distance from the clitoral hood.

Your surgery will typically take between one and two hours.

Pre-operative preparation

There are no specific pre-op preparations other than getting plenty of rest, eating well, and discontinuing smoking and any other excessive habits.

Surgery

Labiaplasty is usually performed on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia or general anesthesia, depending on the extent of the procedure. Once you’ve been made comfortable and are properly sedated, Dr. Keyes will be ready to begin the procedure. The procedure takes two to three hours.

Recovery

There is minimal pain and discomfort following the procedure, little to no scarring, and most patients are back to work and daily activities within a week. However, It is important to wait six weeks to engage in sexual intercourse.

Post-operative appointments

Dr. Keyes will have you return within a week following your operation to remove any sutures or bandages, as well as to ensure that you are healing properly. After this initial follow-up, you can expect to return about two months after surgery, and then again around six months.

Labiaplasty recovery

After Dr. Keyes releases you post-surgery, you will be able to return home to rest. We strongly recommend having a family member or friend available to drive you home because you will most likely be sore and feeling the effects of anesthesia.

You should take at least a week off of work so that you can heal comfortably. There will be some mild-to-moderate pain and swelling that can make sitting uncomfortable. Dr. Keyes does prescribe temporary pain medication to assist you during the initial stages of recovery, but you can also apply an ice pack to alleviate some of the soreness.

You should avoid the use of tampons or any sexual activity for about four to five weeks. Any scars will fade within a few weeks to a couple of months.
