Introduction to Breast Augmentation

Many women see a small chest as a counter to their femininity, and those who are lacking in this area often indicate that they desire a shapelier body that includes a perkier bust. Some of the driving factors for considering breast augmentation in Miami, FL, are the desire to feel sexier and more feminine or even improve the overall contour of your body. Dr. Michael Keyes understands the discomfort women may experience when it comes to their breasts, both psychologically and emotionally. Utilizing his passion for aesthetics and the enhancement of breast augmentation, Dr. Keyes can help you feel more like a beautiful grown woman.

What is a Breast Augmentation?

Breast Augmentation (augmentation mammoplasty) is a surgical cosmetic procedure approved by the FDA to help women dissatisfied with the contour, size, and/or fullness of their breasts or trying to improve breast asymmetry.

Patients will have many important decisions to consider when preparing for their breast implant surgery, such as whether to use saline implants or silicone implants, implant size, and placement. During your personal consultation, Dr. Keyes will review all of your decisions, discussing the pros and cons of each to help you make a better-informed decision.

Breast implants are made with an exterior silicone shell that can be filled with either a silicone gel or saline solution, each with its own strengths and weaknesses. Most patients find that silicone implants can have a different feel for both the person wearing them and the person touching them. While saline breast implants feel “more natural,” they tend to have more rippling and the potential of leaking.

Types of Breast Implants

Silicone Breast Implants

Silicone gel breast implants are typically softer and offer a more natural feel. The latest silicone gel filler is semi-solid, which significantly reduces the risk of implant rupture or leakage compared to older implant designs.

Saline Breast Implants

Saline-filled implants contain a sterile saline solution similar to saltwater in the human body. Unlike silicone implants, saline implants can be pre-filled or filled to their ideal level once inserted empty into the breast pocket.

Fat Transfer Breast Augmentation

For patients looking to achieve larger breasts but would prefer a more natural approach, Fat Transfer for Breast Augmentation can be utilized by using the fat cells from their bodies. This technique can provide some lovely, natural-looking results without the dramatic changes that come with traditional implants. After performing liposuction on areas of your body with excess fat, the fat cells are refined and then injected into your breasts to enhance volume and improve shape.

Implant profiles

The way your breasts rest after your implant surgery is just as important as the increased size of your breasts. Implant profile types, including low, moderate, moderate plus, high, and ultra-high, are all discussed with Dr. Keyes during your consultation. He will work closely with you as you discover which degree of projection is best for you.

Low

Low-profile implants have minimal projection and appear relatively flat, though they are wider at the base. While many women opt for moderate-profile implants or higher, as low-profile implants are often described as having a “pancake” appearance, they are ideal for women with broader chest frames and a fuller breast width seeking a more natural enhancement.

Moderate

Moderate-profile implants offer standard projection with a wider base, typically delivering the most natural-looking results across various body types. They provide more projection than low-profile implants but are less dramatic than high-profile ones. Moderate implants are generally ideal for women with moderately narrow chests.

Moderate Plus

Moderate plus-profile implants offer slightly more projection than moderate-profile implants but less than high-profile ones. This profile is perfect for women with a medium chest frame who desire a bit more projection. It is often the most popular choice, as it strikes a balanced “middle ground” in width and projection, making it well-suited for average body types.

High

High-profile implants have a narrow base width for optimal projection, creating a rounder shape and a more pronounced silhouette. High-profile implants are great for petite women with narrow chest walls who wish to increase the size of their breasts significantly. The major con of high-profile implants is that while they do provide more dramatic results, they can look less natural on certain patients. The implants are often required to be filled up completely, which also makes the breast much firmer, which can feel uncomfortable and seem less natural.

Ultra-high

Ultra-high profile implants feature the narrowest base width and create the most dramatic projection and fullness in the breasts. This profile is perfect for women desiring a highly voluminous look but may appear unnatural on some body types. Because of this, Dr. Keyes provides candid advice to patients about whether this implant profile complements their natural proportions.

Implant and incision placement

Since every patient has unique anatomy and personal aesthetic goals, Dr. Keyes can perform a variety of incisions and placement options to match your body type and desires naturally. During your consultation, Dr. Keyes will determine the best placement options for the implant itself and where he will make the incision to hide any scarring.

Implants can be placed either behind the breast tissue (subglandular) or beneath the chest muscles (submuscular). Most patients opt for submuscular placement, as it may reduce the risk of scar tissue formation and make mammography easier. However, subglandular placement may be more suitable for patients with sagging breasts. The decision on implant placement depends on factors such as whether the implant is filled with silicone or saline, its size, the size and shape of the pre-augmentation breast, and other individual considerations.

PAIN CONTROL

Dr. Keyes will prescribe you some scheduled pain medications that he may have you begin taking the night before surgery or on the day of.

NAUSEA PREVENTION

Post-operative nausea is very common after breast surgery, so if you have a history of this, please let Dr. Keyes know ahead of time. A patch can be placed behind your ear either the night before or the morning of the surgery. You will need a prescription for this if Dr. Keyes wants you to apply it before you come to the hospital. Most insurance covers this medication.

REGIONAL ANESTHESIA

A local anesthetic, such as lidocaine, will numb the nerves responsible for sensation at the surgery site. This can be administered through a nerve block before the surgery or by injecting a long-acting anesthetic during the procedure.

ANTI-INFLAMMATORY MEDICINES

Like the pain medication you will take, Dr. Keyes will prescribe medications before surgery to help reduce inflammation. When used alongside opioids, these medications are even more effective than when taken alone.

REDUCING SURGICAL INFECTIONS

To help reduce the possibility of wound infection, you should wash your hands using antibacterial soap before and after surgery. You should also always wash your hands before and after handling drains and dressings.

ACTIVITY AFTER SURGERY

Getting out of bed the night after surgery is crucial for a faster recovery. Patients who start moving early experience less pain and recover more quickly. While you should avoid lifting more than 10 lbs during the first few weeks, it’s important to gently move your arms and shoulders to prevent stiffness and lymphedema.

Most patients can gradually resume their exercise routine about a week after their breast augmentation. However, to prevent this, you will need to avoid chest muscle exercises for the first six weeks.

It’s important to not rush your recovery prematurely and using your pectoralis muscle due to potential complications, which can include fluid collection, implant displacement, or the increased potential for capsular contracture.

Our breast augmentation patients usually return to work and their other daily duties within seven to ten days. You should not perform any strenuous physical activities for up to four weeks. Dr. Keyes will regularly meet with you to check on your healing progress and demonstrate the various ways to massage your breasts to help your implants settle more appropriately to create the natural results you desire.

Additional optional support

With the advancement of technology comes a new variety of additional options that our Miami patients may add to their implant surgery. We utilize the most current tools and techniques available to ensure gorgeous and long-lasting results time and time again. If you are intrigued by these options, Dr. Keyes will be more than happy to discuss further adding these techniques to enhance your results during your consultation.

THE KELLER FUNNEL

The Keller Funnel is an FDA-approved device that helps plastic surgeons place silicone gel implants more effectively. It looks similar to a frosting bag, with the narrow tip inserted into the incision. The implant is then placed into the Funnel, which transfers it directly from the original packaging. Dr. Keyes then places the pre-filled implant into the breast pocket by gently squeezing the device, and the slippery substance that coats the inside of the Funnel allows the implant to slide into the pocket and the breast.

One of the major perks of this technique is that it requires smaller incisions, which, in turn, leads to even less visible scarring and a faster healing time. The nature of this device also allows a no-touch sterile approach, so there is less risk of implant shell contamination, which can lead to infection. The Keller Funnel also has less risk for capsular contracture, which is a common complication from Breast Augmentation surgery when scar tissue forms around the pocket holding the implant.

DURASORB MESH

DuraSorb mesh is a groundbreaking material designed to provide support and structure during the initial stages of healing after surgery. Unlike other surgical meshes that can remain in the body permanently and may be associated with complications later on, DuraSorb is made from bioabsorbable materials, similar to dissolvable sutures, and gradually dissolves over time.

The majority of the exceptionally thin material dissolves after the critical healing phase is complete (about three months post-surgery), and the remaining material is absorbed after about a year. DuraSorb acts like a hammock, gently supporting the new implant as scar tissue forms around it. Once this process is complete, the mesh is no longer necessary and will fully dissolve, leaving patients with their enhanced, beautiful figure.

Providing structural support during the initial months of healing after surgery is essential, and DuraSorb mesh plays a key role in reducing the risk of complications such as implant displacement, capsular contracture, further breast sagging or drooping, and, most importantly, poor cosmetic outcomes. Additional benefits of using DuraSorb mesh include:

  • Additional support when needed
  • Better breast symmetry
  • Decreased level of scarring
  • Increased pocket control for Dr. Keyes during the procedure
  • More precise, beautiful, natural-looking results
  • More soft tissue support during wound healing

What are the benefits of Breast Augmentation?

Breast Augmentation in Miami can produce some incredible benefits following their procedure, including:

  • Added volume to small breasts: One of the most common concerns of women around the world is the size of their breasts. Breast augmentation allows you to have the exact cup size you want.
  • Clothing fits better: After receiving your implants, you may discover that clothing conforms better to your body, opening up exciting and new possibilities.
  • Immediate and stunning results: Although you will be a little bruised and swollen after your procedure, you can see your results immediately.
  • Improves the appearance of asymmetrical breasts: If you’re like most people, your body’s not perfect. Breast enhancement surgery can help you achieve perfect symmetry.
  • Improved confidence and self-esteem: Your body’s contour plays a significant role in your self-confidence, which is why so many women regain their self-esteem after getting breast implants.
  • Restores volumes after pregnancy and weight loss: Many women find that after massive weight loss, their breasts are no longer as voluptuous as they once were. This surgery can permanently improve the size of your breasts.

Who are the best candidates for the Breast Augmentation procedure?

If you are wondering if you are a good candidate for breast augmentation in Miami, FL, you should have at least some of these characteristics:

  • Are you concerned that your breasts are smaller than you’d like
  • Have asymmetrical breasts
  • Are unhappy with the loss of shape and volume due to pregnancy, weight loss, or aging
  • Have realistic expectations
  • Not currently pregnant or breastfeeding
  • No underlying medical conditions

Breast augmentation should only be considered once a patient’s breasts have fully developed, though there is no age limit for the procedure later in life, as long as the patient is in good health.

WHAT'S THE FIRST STEP

If you’re interested in getting Breast Augmentation surgery in the Miami area, the first step is to speak with our Patient Care Coordinator to discuss your goals and an initial screening. Once this is complete, you will be able to have a consultation with Dr. Keyes.

When you visit Celebrity Plastics for your appointment, Dr. Keyes will assess your health and discuss the surgical techniques that are best suited for you, based on the condition of your breasts.

Dr. Keyes will consider your body frame and proportions when determining your right breast size. While many patients initially consider larger breast implants for augmentation, smaller implants can also provide striking, natural results. You will also explore your options, including fat transfer, saline, or silicone implants, and discuss each choice’s associated risks and limitations.

Finally, you will choose the placement of your breast implants, your desired cup size, and the type of implant. We can show you “before-and-after” photos of real patients and provide implant sizers, allowing you to get a sense of how a larger implant might look. Depending on your nipple placement, you may also want to discuss the possibility of a breast lift with Dr. Keyes.

Dr. Keyes will gather all the necessary information to create your personalized surgical plan. Our Patient Coordinator will assist in scheduling your appointment and provide you with pre-surgery instructions to ensure the best possible outcome for your procedure.

WHAT TO EXPECT ON THE DAY OF BREAST AUGMENTATION SURGERY

The details of your breast augmentation procedure will depend on the type of breast implants you choose. However, regardless of the implant type, the procedure will begin by administering general anesthesia to create a more comfortable and painless experience.

For example, the fat transfer method will require more operative time depending on the extent of the liposuctioned areas and your desired breast size.

After you are sedated, Dr. Keyes will make incisions in your natural creases and folds to help minimize visible scarring. Some options for incision placement include:

  • Inframammary incision, which is placed in your breast crease
  • Transaxillary incision, which is made in the armpit
  • Periareolar incision, which is done around the areola

Depending on your specific augmentation, Dr. Keyes has several options for implant placement. The most common choices are either beneath the pectoral muscle or directly behind the breast tissue. Placing the implant above the pectoral muscle is also an option, depending on your needs.

Once the implant or fat graft is in place, Dr. Keyes will close the incisions using layered sutures within the breast tissue to provide added support. The external skin incisions will be closed with sutures or surgical tape.

Depending on the techniques used by Dr. Keyes, the operation should take between one to two hours.

Breast Augmentation FAQs

YOUR QUESTIONS, ANSWERED BY THE BEST IN MIAMI

Is Breast Augmentation painful?

Most of our Miami breast implant patients find surgery to be relatively painless, as it is performed under anesthesia. There will be some expected swelling, bruising, pain, and minor discomfort during the early stages of recovery, but this will subside in time.

Dr. Keyes will prescribe pain medications to help manage pain or discomfort. We will also provide directions to help ease your recovery and healing process and achieve the best results.

How many appointments will I need?

After your Breast Augmentation, Dr. Keyes will have you return about a week after the surgery to monitor your recovery, remove any stitches, and redress bandages if needed. You will need to return a month or two later, followed by another one three months post-surgery, and once more six months later (about 12 months post-surgery). Photos may also be taken at one of your final check-ups to be used in a comparison photo.

Dr. Keyes always informs you of when your next appointment will be and how he believes you are healing.

How long until I see results?

Some patients can notice their augmentation results almost immediately following surgery (mainly if it’s a significant change). There will still be some swelling and bruising that will persist for a few weeks. In the following three to four months, your breasts will continue to go through changes, with your final implant results settling into their new rested position.

Can I combine Breast Augmentation with other procedures?

Yes! Combining your breast augmentation with other procedures is a great way to improve multiple concerns at once. Many of our Miami patients will also add a Breast Lift to create a perkier bust appearance or include a body contouring cosmetic procedure, like the Brazilian Butt Lift or Tummy Tuck. Regardless of your aesthetic goals, Dr. Keyes will be happy to use his expertise and knowledge to recommend proper cosmetic procedures.

What are the risks associated with Breast Augmentation?
